Design of the SPring-8 JAEA beamline BL22XU

We designed the hard X-ray undulator beamline BL22XU, which is dedicated to Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) at SPring-8 (now Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA)). BL22XU is used for XAFS (X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) analysis experiments to develop separation and extraction materials for radioactive waste treatment and to elucidate their chemical behavior, magnetic research experiments using a diffractometer, and experiments under extreme conditions using a high-pressure press and a diamond anvil cell. The available X-ray energy range was set from 3 to 70 keV. To design the optics of the beamline, the reflectivity of the mirrors, the diffraction width of the monochromatic crystal, and the absorptance of the Be window were calculated. In addition, ray tracing was performed to optimize the materials for optics, dimensions, and location. The delay time of the ADL (Acoustic Delay Line) was also examined to ensure the safety in the use of radioactive materials. The operation of BL22XU "JAEA Actinide Science I" has already started. By collaborating BL22XU and BL23SU "JAEA Actinide Science II," which uses a soft X-ray undulator as a light source, we solve the problems to promote nuclear sciences. Since the monochromator was upgraded in 2018-2019, initial planning and measured data are documented here again.

Stabilizing methods against mechanical vibrations of vacuum exhaustion units on BL11XU at SPring-8

Stabilizing methods for vacuum exhaustion units in the optics section of the beamline have been developed on BL11XU at SPring-8. In this study, we especially focus on the vibrations from scroll pumps in the vacuum exhaustion units. Vibration frequencies are measured directly on the scroll pump under multiple conditions. The results showed that countermeasures to restrain the 30Hz vibration from scroll pumps on the beamline which was caused by working scroll pump are (1) using a damper for scroll pump, (2) pulling out the scroll pump from a vacuum unit support, and (3) settling flexible tubes and the scroll pump on the floor. These methods successfully removed the mechanical vibrations of the scroll pumps. As a result, the amplitude of 30Hz vibration on the monochromator crystals was decreased from 3.3$$times$$10-5mm to 6.2$$times$$10-6mm. The developed method in the present study on BL11XU is expected to apply to the similar vacuum units at the other beamlines.

Neutron diffractometer for biological macromolecule crystallography

Neutron diffraction provides an experimental method of directly locating hydrogen atoms in proteins and nucleic acids, and the development of the neutron imaging plate (NIP) became a breakthrough event in neutron protein crystallography. A high-resolution neutron diffractometers dedicated to biological macromolecules (BIX-3, BIX-4) with the NIP have been constructed at Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. The detailed structure of the diffractometer and the systematic procedure of the neutron diffraction experiment from the crystallization of a large single crystal to the data collection and the data processing, and the future prospect of the neutron diffractometry in proteins will be presented.

Characterization of cryogenically cooled silicon crystals, for the double-crystal monochromator on BL11XU at SPring-8

Liquid-N$$_{2}$$-cooled Si crystals replaced water-cooled diamond crystals for the double-crystal monochromator on BL11XU at SPring-8. To use the whole energy from 6 keV to 70 keV, we developed the system of dual symmetric Si geometry, Si(111)/Si(311), which can be switched by a horizontal translation (X) stage perpendicular to the beam axis. The off-line experiment was performed to estimate the degree of the crystal strain, which may arise from the way of assembling in the crystal holder. With MoK$$alpha$$$$_{1}$$, rocking curves from the crystals were measured for the second crystal of the double-crystal diffractometer of parallel setting. Each of the observed full-width at half maximum (FWHM) was almost constant and identical to the calculated value wherever X-rays hit on the crystal surface. By the use of synchrotron radiation from the undulator the crystals were tested and then the characterization was performed. The observed intensities and rocking curves resulted in that each crystal was good for BL11XU and that the performance of X-ray reflection was improved.

Cryogenically cooled monochromator with multi-crystal switching system on BL11XU at SPring-8

We developed a multi-crystal switching system on a cryogenically cooled monochromator of JAERI materials science beamline, BL11XU. In order to study our science, it is necessary for ensuring at least the energy range of 6 - 70keV to employ Si(111) and Si(311) crystals. The principle of the crystal switching is that, two pair of crystals is arranged side by side, and they are translated in horizontal direction for exchanging. Indium sheets were inserted between both sides of crystals in order to improve thermal contact. Some adjustment stages of the monochromator were removed to avoid the crystal vibration and a sheet heater was installed on an X-axis stage to prevent over-cooling of X-axis stages. The monochromator is under commissioning at present. In comparison with a previous indirect water cooling diamond (111) crystal monochromator, this monochromator provides high flux intensity from 4 times to 7 times. It takes only 5 minutes to exchange and adjust crystals geometry. This mechanism will be easily applied to other crystals, for example asymmetrical-cut crystals.

The present performance of a soft X-ray bealmine BL23SU at SPring-8 is described. The resolving power realized on a varied-line-spacing plane grating monochromator connected to a was estimated to be better than 10000 at 400 eV and 6500 at 867 eV. In addition, reasonable photon flux of more than 10$$^{11}$$ photons/sec/100mA/0.02% b.w. is available in the energy range of 0.5-1.8 keV at experimental stations.
